Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Slow the progression of this silent thief of sight.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. It affects the macula—the part of your retina responsible for sharp, central vision—making reading, driving, and recognizing faces difficult. Because AMD often develops without symptoms, early detection is key.

Early Detection with Advanced Imaging

At Valley Vision Center, we use state-of-the-art technology to detect AMD in its earliest stages:

  • Optomap® Digital Retinal Imaging – This advanced scan captures more than 95% of your retina in one image, revealing subtle changes that may indicate early AMD. The scan is quick, noninvasive, and usually requires no dilation.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – Using light waves, OCT creates detailed cross-sectional images of your retina and optic nerve layers. This allows your doctor to map, measure, and monitor changes over time for precise management of AMD.

Risk Factors & Prevention

Your risk increases with age, family history, smoking, sun exposure, and genetics. Protect your vision with regular eye exams, a healthy lifestyle, UV and blue light protection, and recommended nutritional supplements.

Treatment & Management

There are two types of AMD—dry and wet. Dry AMD progresses slowly, while wet AMD can cause rapid vision loss. Newer therapies for wet AMD can help slow progression and preserve sight.
